Health Hazards

Mold and Mildew Inspection: taking the ‘eww’ out of your home

Ask me why you should not pay me or anyone for a "mold inspection"!

Cowles Home Inspection cares about the health of you and your family. No home is completely free of mold and mildew; however, excessive levels can aggravate respiratory and immune system conditions and inflame sinuses. A quality home inspection can spot the presence of mold and mildew on the foundation, the inside walls and around pipes and drainage areas. Standing or leaking water and high humidity are the most common risk factors. I will scour your home top to bottom for the presence of this common health risk.

If excessive mold and mildew is spotted, a professional will be recommended to rectify the condition.

Radon: the invisible nemesis

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive material found in the Atlanta area. Excessive presence of radon has been linked to lung cancer. A test for radon is relatively inexpensive but is a separate service from the home inspection. Unlike a gas leak which can be smelled or fungi growth that can be seen, radon is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Radon reduction systems are proven to eliminate nearly all presence of this hazard.

Calvin is one of only approximately 40 Georgia Home Inspectors certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program of the National Environmental Health Association, the only EPA recognized Radon certification.

Lead: don’t eat the paint chips

Lead is best known as an additive to outdated paint and has a sweet taste that children can unwittingly ingest. Lead also can be in drinking water leached from old plumbing. A home inspection includes a search for this risk factor. Homes built after 1978 are generally safe. For homes older than that, testing by a qualified specialist may be recommended.

Asbestos: a good idea gone wrong

Asbestos was originally used as a fire retardant but has become synonymous with health hazards. The presence of asbestos is not in itself a hazard; however, when disturbed or deteriorated, small particles can become airborne and lodge in the lungs. Asbestos is no longer used in new home construction. If materials are found that could contain asbestos, a more in-depth inspection may be required.

Calvin has been recognized by the Mesothelioma Cancer Center as a certified asbestos inspector.
